The word "alternative" refers to the genre's distinction from mainstream rock music both in terms of the artists and the sound. It gave birth various subgenres such as grunge, indie rock, Britpop, gothic rock and indie pop.

An abbreviation of Rhythm and Blues, RnB has significantly evolved from it's original sound. Sharing similarities with hip pop and rap but usually with a softer smoother sound. As the name suggests, rhythm still plays a big part in the sound of this genre.

Centered on the guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass guitar and drums. Typically, rock is song-based music usually with a 4/4 time signature using a verse-chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse.
